A Medieval Cycle Play Set in the American West
In this here play, the Christmas story has a sort of twist. Them shepherd boys are cattle ranchers, livin’ way out West. From out of nowhere comes a lamb, which makes for complication, For sheep in cattle country are a right abomination, And so they have to hide the lamb. They almost get ‘er done, Until a peddler comes to call. (Ole Mack’s a slippery one.) When he’s around, it ain’t a good idea to turn your back, But no one ever thought he’d rustle sheep—including Mack. A few more twists and turns and it gets ironed out at last, And everyone comes out of it ahead, but not so fast… A stranger meets the cowboys on the moonlit countryside. She reads to them a letter with some tender words inside, And then a flickerin’ light ignites their curiosity. They track it to an old corral, unsure of what they’ll see. Now, this might sound familiar. After all, the story’s old, But it’s still got a kick to it, no matter how it’s told. |
