Nikolai Gogol's greatest contribution to the theatre would undoubtedly be the satiric farce titled The Inspector General, which has enjoyed several incarnations on both stage and screen.
Gogol's novellas and short stories, however, reveal his fascination with all things macabre. On Such a Night draws from several of those works:
*Gogol's idea of Christmas Eve bears a strong resemblance to the modern idea of All Saints' Eve (Halloween).
